Anthropic users face a new choice – opt out or share your chats for AI training

Anthropic is implementing major changes to its data policies, asking all Claude users to choose by September 28 whether their chats can be used for AI training. Previously, consumer data was automatically deleted within 30 days unless flagged for policy or legal reasons. Now, conversations may be retained for up to five years if users do not opt out. Business customers, such as Claude for Work or Claude Gov, remain unaffected by these changes, similar to how OpenAI protects enterprise clients.

The company presents this as a way for users to help improve Claude’s capabilities, including better detection of harmful content and enhanced skills in coding, analysis, and reasoning. However, the broader objective is to gather vast amounts of real-world data necessary to maintain competitive performance against other AI leaders like OpenAI and Google. Access to these interactions allows Anthropic to train more sophisticated models and strengthen its position in the AI landscape.
