Investors Bet on Born as a Pioneer in Emotionally Intelligent AI

Berlin’s AI startup Born, co-founded by Fabian Kamberi, is taking a social-first approach to artificial intelligence. Kamberi warns that today’s AI companions isolate users, and he advocates for shared experiences that enhance human connection.

Pengu, the company’s leading app, enables two users to co-parent a virtual pet. The freemium model has attracted over 15 million users, though subscription details are not public. Pengu’s design encourages collaboration, positioning it as more than just a virtual pet app.

Born, formerly Slay, has raised $25 million from investors including Accel, Tencent, and Laton Ventures. The funding will fuel the launch of new AI companions, such as a learning-focused model, and support a New York expansion centered on AI research and marketing.

Another upcoming product targets the 16–21 demographic. Designed as culturally relevant AI companions, they will act like digital friends and even share TikTok or Instagram content. Kamberi expects network effects to accelerate adoption, with investors calling Born a pioneer in emotionally intelligent AI.
